Andrew sets his lights in the old guest room like he means it. His mother hovers by the doorway, lips parted, while a stranger named Lila drops her robe and the silk pools around her ankles. Andrew adjusts the angle of the reflector, calling instructions in a low, certain voice that surprises even him. Lila turns, back arched, one hand resting on her hip. Light glances off the soft rise of her breasts, travels the line of her spine, the curve of her ass. His mother’s fingers tighten on the frame of the door. She shifts her weight, crosses and uncrosses her legs, each small movement giving her away. Andrew keeps shooting. The shutter clicks, sharp and rhythmic. Lila’s skin prickles under the cool air, nipples tightening, thighs parting a fraction more than the pose requires. His mother watches every inch. The scent of jasmine and warm skin hangs in the room. Andrew lowers the camera just long enough to meet her eyes. In that half-second she looks away, breath caught, but not before he sees how wet her lower lip has become and how her hand has drifted, almost without permission, to the front of her dress.
