Canoga Park - Episode 2

The lights hit. A line of bodies in sequins and fishnets kicked high, hips snapping to the beat, every turn flashing bare skin and sweat. The director barked counts from the shadows. This was supposed to be the big number, the one that sold the show. Then the lead went down. Her heel caught the edge of a riser and her leg snapped like dry wood. She hit the boards and stayed there, white-faced, swearing through her teeth. The pianist stopped mid-chord. For half a second nobody moved. Then the stage manager was on her phone, already dialing the clinic. Nobody said the word cancel. The bus from the coast pulled in at 2 a.m. Same tired girls, same duffel bags, one of them still had bus dust on her lashes. She didn’t even have a dressing room yet when they shoved the lead’s costume into her arms and told her to learn the marks. She stripped in the wings while the choreographer rattled off steps she’d never seen. The fabric still carried the other woman’s perfume and a faint trace of blood from the fall. The girl tugged the bustier higher, tried the first kick, missed the timing, tried again. Onstage the broken girl’s cry still echoed in her ears, thin and angry. She swallowed hard, tasted copper, and waited for the downbeat.
